A couple of years back, we had some big solar flares and a surprising number of British phone exchanges were toasted when the EM on the phone lines cooked the networking equipment.
This took down the internet for chunks of the Uk.

The race is between the roll out which is not proceeding at anywhere near the needed pace, and the sun which is just on it’s own schedule, and Kessler Syndrome, which is kinda sorta under way.
