A friend of mine from the States asked me if I’d been keeping up with what’s going on in #politics. I responded with this:

“ I've been watching the coverage (mostly from Hasan). I'll never return to live in the USA, but part of my heart will always be there because of the people I love. I think a lot about James Baldwin, and why he left France to head back to the USA. A lot of what he said about that was about the culture of his people (black people) that he missed.” (1/8)

“I have no desire like that to go and fight there for (white/queer) people. Even a lot of queer culture in the USA is steeped in corporatism and white supremacy. “

“Getting out of the country has cleared my head on so much. I've missed people, but the culture as a whole that I lived in? Fuck no. I'm old, tired, and a lot of the fire I had to fight is behind me.“ (2/8)

“Maybe I should be ashamed to say that, but the fatigue of the weight of the world and what's coming just makes me even more tired. The abuse from that culture, just for wanting to be me and live (because I'm visibly #transgender ) has felt like being under someone's boot. I'm still in danger here in the UK, but never to the extent I've felt in the USA (and especially Indiana). “ (3/8)

“Every day I've felt being outside the USA has felt like a day when I'm less oppressed, less stressed, and less constrained by the culture just to get on with living.” (4/8)

“Over the past 8 years, I've read a lot more of #anarchist and #communist books, and had time to think about what's going on today in the world. Capitalism is failing, especially the neoliberal framework of the world that was put in place after WW2 and accelerated immensely from the 70s onward. Wealth distribution is getting more and more lopsided. Power distribution between the classed is just as lopsided.” (5/8)

“A few years ago, I read “Manufacturing Consent” by Noam Chomsky. It's odd to be on the other side of that book and seeing consent for all kinds of fucked up things being manufactured live. “ (6/8)

“What's happening right now with immigrants and trans rights, especially, is just a distraction. What's happening is very real, but the reason behind it is not. Those in power simply care about keeping that power at all costs. Seeing a feeble Chuck Schumer on the Capitol steps chanting “we will win” just kind of summed up where #Democrats are. They will not win.” (7/8)

“I've been saying this for a while, but watching #Biden has just solidified it for me. Biden was just #Trump, with a smiley face mask on. Trump brazenly says that he will ethnically cleanse #Gaza, Biden does it while lying or ignoring the world consensus that he is.”

“They are the same party, with two different flavours. It's all a game. It's the Indianapolis Colts vs the Atlanta Falcons, but at the end of the day…it's still the NFL.” (8/8)

@goatsarah I understand that. I probably won’t stay here into retirement. It’s not great here. There was a by-election here yesterday in Medway and Reform took two of the three seats. The writing is on the wall.
