But it's not quite that simple, see you've gotta get an RS-485 interface board too, and to do that you've gotta get some breadboard and... oh wait you just buy it online and it comes as another white plastic square

You interface the microcontroller with the RS-485 interface and the associated wiring by plugging the white square into the white rectangle and putting the orange block in the top and it's Lego, it's bloody Lego! I spent thirteen months procrastinating on a three-block Lego set!

To make this go in the water heater it's gotta go through an old-fashioned phone wire, so we cut off one end,

strip the ends off three inner wires, leave one dangling and screw the other three into the orange block according to the diagram on the website.

Then you gotta program the microcontroller, next post 'cause it gets weird...

To program this lump of plastic, you plug it into your computer with a USB-C wire and then click a link on a web page.

THIS IS ALL HORRIBLY CONFUSING IF YOU THOUGHT YOU KNEW HOW TO PROGRAM MICROCONTROLLERS

Imagine your caveman friend turning up at your solstice bonfire with his bow and sticks all

🦝 Hey, I thought I'd lend a hand, you know how I enjoy a good fire!
🦊 Oh hi! You wanna get it started?
🦝 I'd love to, lemme just swizzle my sticks here and we'll have it roaring in no time!
🦊 Oh yeah, we've also got this lighter here, you wanna give it a go?
🦝
🦊 You just flick it with your thumb like this 🔥
🦝
🦝 Okay what the fuck

🦝 Ah, but getting Home Assistant to talk to this plastic box is surely going to use some of the courage that I've been Steeling Myself Up with and Bracing Myself For for the past thirteen months, I bet it - okay no, I pressed a button and it went OKAY BOSS and just did the thing.

🦝 WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH ALL THIS BRACE

I am informed that I BROKE THE THREAD, I will fix it later on, probably this evening
