Sunak claims there is 'element of compassion' to Rwanda policy because it is meant to stop dangerous Channel crossings:

Hypocritical bullshit like this convinces me that Sunak is cynically playing to the Tory membership base because they won't let him fix the actual underlying problems.

And Starmer is just as bad, beating the English Nationalist drum for all he's worth.

if they truly wanted to do something effective, they would open an asylum processing centre in Calais. Would be a lot cheaper too. But if course, that wouldn't be cruel. And for the Tories. The cruelty is the point.

Obviously, there's “an element of compassion" in Texas's sadistic razor buoys in the rio Grande, because they are meant to discourage people from risking their lives by trying to swim the river.

And if those prove inadequate, I'm sure they'll be ready to put up some compassionate machine-gun towers or lay a compassionate minefield or two.

The Rwanda policy relies, and has always relied, on a central bit of DoubleThink.
It depends on Rwanda being both,
(a) a safe modern country that refugees can thrive in, and
(b) a deterrent

it's heartbreaking. Especially Labour's continued refusal to show any conviction of conscience. 😢
in reply to blaine

@blaine I don't even know if they're wrong about their electorate though. maybe that's the worst part.
in reply to Quinn Norton

@quinn yup, it really is. I concluded they aren't. 🛫😢

In fairness, I think most people's politics are pretty shallow and a lot of opinions are easily changed by good [or bad] leadership (as much as I wish that weren't true).

@blaine humanity is going through a rough patch, but we do always get out better than we were before. I mean, sometimes it takes a while and is pretty fucking horrible, but we do get better

@quinn 💯 I can't tell you how relieved and actually really stoked I am about the local school board byelection. Historically, the outcome we got would have been a wild fantasy, verging on masochism to even imagine.

element of compassion: They’ll be flown on Airbus and not Boeing?

The UK has become such a sad place, so glad I moved out. Tbf, everywhere has its problems.
