A Tesla owner has been charged with vehicular homicide for killing a motorcyclist while browsing the web on their phone while the car was on Autopilot. According to the driver he was “putting the trust in the machine to drive for him,”

The naming of this feature kills people.

@Dare Obasanjo Do ... people think that autopilot on planes and boats, where the term comes from, does anything much more complicated than "hold this course and this speed"? I have a boat. Autopilot has three modes:

1 - go to this lat/long in a straight line, regardless of what's in the way

2 - follow this compass heading, regardless of what's in the way

3 - hold this angle to the wind, regardless of what's in the way

I think people who have never had first hand experience of actual real autopilots are severely overestimating what it is they actually do. They're basically just cruise control for boats and planes.

"This is full self driving but of course you are still responsible if our system fails." 🙄

@kaffeeringe Yeah, I don't think any system should be called "full self driving" until the company that produced it takes full responsibility of it's actions.

@Hank G ☑️ @Dare Obasanjo he’s a fecking eejit, and so are they.

My Leaf has the same capabilities more or less. Once every thousand kilometres or so it tries to kill me.

Computers aren’t scared of dying. People need to understand that.

Good. It's about time blatant lies in advertising were punished.
