Ah

We have a TGV station (Valence TGV Rhône-Alpes Sud) that has a train line to the town (Valence Ville)

How should we connect the two in the middle of the morning?

SURE! A BUS! 🤦‍♂️

in reply to Jon Worth

Ah

And who the hell might want to connect from the train from Marseille and *get into Valence* 😡

Connection missed by 4 minutes

in reply to Jon Worth

Needless to say, they also don’t wait if one or the other is delayed
in reply to Jon Worth

this stuff happens so often that I'm sure they do this on purpose to avoid anyone believing that a connection is expected to work

or maybe they get some kind of pleasure pulling out of a station watching the sad faces of everyone on the train opposite. was probably written into the union contract in lieu of a pay rise one year

in reply to Oliver Blanthorn

@bovine3dom When I asked a train manager about it in Hauts de France a few weeks ago - when I saw the connecting train leave as mine pulled in - he looked at me as if I had three heads for even asking. I then told him Czechia did this better and he was a bit annoyed.
in reply to Jon Worth

It's going to be another one of those Jon-on-a-bike-is-faster-than-waiting-for-SNCF moments, isn't it
in reply to Jon Worth

Done that (with a Brompton). Luckily it goes mostly down, but the road is quite awful.
in reply to Jon Worth

@photodouze I highly recommend a headlamp as well. Did it a few times and it’s not pleasant being there after dark.
in reply to Grégoire

@grlodi @photodouze It’ll be middle of the day in April, most likely. So should be fine 😀 And I always have decent headlights on the Birdy - hell I’ve needed them!
in reply to Jon Worth

@grlodi @photodouze it’s been a long time i went by there, but i’m not sure there is a decent bike lane and iirc it’s a highway for cars, and [checking] the road on the side doesn’t look great 😬

in reply to Gabriel Pettier

@tshirtman @grlodi @photodouze I’m using Komoot, it routes me on side lanes. Better routing than Google Maps. It’ll be fine in the daytime.
in reply to Jon Worth

Once again: Avez-vous pensé au co-voiturage ? 🤡

Jon Worth reshared this.

in reply to Jon Worth

This is why it's called active travel, first the brain work to figure out a schedule, then the leg work to bridge the gaps between services.
in reply to Jon Worth

I took a taxi...

Have a look if that road actually allows bikes. It looked like an Autobahn.

in reply to Knud Jahnke

@knud With minor tweaks: komoot.com/tour/1980769775 Easy to avoid the dual carriageway
in reply to Jon Worth

OK, good. I just felt very autobahny - but that was all I saw and my focus was on my watch, not bikeroutes 😬
in reply to Knud Jahnke

@knud oh I am sure you can do it pretty fast 🙂 Not my concern thankfully though, if all goes to plan!
in reply to Jon Worth

My _taxi_ was able to do it pretty fast. This wasn't planned, but the end of a 6h chase that started in Mannheim.
in reply to Jon Worth

Agonising. Why let a train run from the middle of nowhere? Because _obviously_ you want to take the direct TER from Marseille, it's why it's there, not for those fools who like to take a TGV. TGV is made for Paris, not for the rest of the country.
in reply to Jon Worth

@Jon Worth Best description I heard of how SNCF operates is "A flight level zero airline".

And ... yeah.

in reply to Jon Worth

coordinating schedules is probably against the law in France.
in reply to Jon Worth

Marseille-Grenoble can be done in about 2h30 with a decent connection in Valence TGV. Unfortunately, this is only possible once a day. Probably, absolutely not on purpose.
in reply to Jon Worth

I love reading your posts, I believed this was a normal railway for most part of my life. Most French think this is normal and doing better is too hard/expensive/impossible.
in reply to Jon Worth

same crap everywhere, the TER are slowly being replaced by buses in the middle of morning, afternoon and later in the evenings.
Makes no sense and so frustrating when the infrastructure exists
