Still no baby goats - really hoping today is the day (because tomorrow is all day Zoom meetings)

The plus side of having to go out to the barn at 2am to check on pregnant goats is that there were faint auroras (which actually must have been pretty bright just to compete with the nearly-fully moon), and I heard 2 great horned owls calling back and forth to each other.

I grumble a bit when I know I need to go out to the barn to check on one of the four-leggeds in the middle of the night. But once I get out there the night offers up so much inspiration. Then I’m so grateful I got out of bed.

No baby goats yet, but it's nice to see all the animals enjoying the warm sun. That goat in the middle of the picture using the other goat as a pillow might be the most blissfully comfortable creature in the world.

We just returned from a week among sheep. They all love the spring.
in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

They know about the zoom meetings, and intend to interfere.

i hope goat babies hold off for awhile … we only ever lost 1 horse. no goats though. lots of Nubian and French alpine, and angora, i think around 30 horses being born in total . GL!
in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

perhaps they don't want to deal with the harsh weather🐐✋️❄️
in reply to G 🇮🇹

@ranx It was super warm and nice out yesterday! Today it is raining. Maybe she has a different idea of nice weather than me.
in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

Still no baby goats.

But the livestock guardian dog found THE BEST spot in the whole yard to guard from. What a good dog!

...still no baby goats. But it's actually been kind of nice to force myself to go outside and check on the very pregnant one every hour or so during all these meetings!
in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

Thanks for the baby-goat-watch updates! I'm eagerly following along.
in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

i would go to more meetings if there was the possibility that someone would bring baby goats
in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

It always happens in the middle of the night lol

Still no babies! That poor mama goat is huge and her udder is so big it is painful to look at.

Starting to get a bit worried, but she's not quite late enough for it to be likely there are any problems (also there are no vets at all anywhere around here who work on goats, so I'm on my own whatever happens ☹️ )

in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

similar to sheep in vet terms.

Sometimes it is just patience needed. Is she in any distress (outside of the I am heavily pregnant type)?

in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

we worry about animals in our care it is only natural. Sheep I have helped birth but not goats, so only the most general of help and support.
in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

Oh dear....😟 this is worrisome news. I hope everything turns out alright.
Baby goats are adorable.😀
in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

Still no babies.

But I did get to watch the llama and the livestock guardian dog having an extremely chill disagreement about whether this hay bale is a comfy watchtower or a delicious snack.

in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

the poor mama goats must be so ready to hurry up and have the babies!
in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

STILL no babies! I was so sure she was going to have them last night I turned on the heat lamp for her. Only to find a very comfortable, very pregnant goat, basking under the heat lamp when I checked on her at 2am and 6am (man I am tired...) Last year one of my goats was 5 days late and all the babies had severe nutritional problems, which I worked really hard to not have this year...ugh farming is hard.

Anyway...the baby chicks are doing great! (Definitely in their "awkward stage" though)

in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

fingers crossed all goes well with the goats, but man the awkward phase of chicks is cute.
in reply to snow creature abby ☃️

@vapaad It really is. I love this stage! Their bodies look like tiny, fully feathered chickens, but their heads DEFINITELY do not
in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

I'm reasonably sure the mama goat is *finally* in labour! I'm going to go sit in the barn with my tablet and read a neutrino PhD thesis while keeping her company and making sure everything goes smoothly.
in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

love social media, I have been totally invested for days! From another continent 😀
in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

You know she'll wait until 2am to drop them though! 😁 🐐
in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

THIS IS NOT A DRILL: WE HAVE BABY GOATS!!!

Oh my gosh they're so cute

in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

omg 😱🥰🥹😃the goats are here Ooo Congrats!! So happy for you and family! 🤗

@CedarTea I only used the ones that smelled the least detergent-y. The rest are still hanging up because they're soooo smelly. ugh.
in reply to CedarTea

@CedarTea Yeah no kidding! I was wearing an N95 mask while I was looking for towels at the thrift store so I didn't notice how absurdly potent it was 😬

Babies and mama are looking great (the mama passed the placenta with no trouble, yay).

They will get spoiled with a heat lamp tonight (even though it's not even getting below freezing tonight), and tomorrow night I think they'll be just fine with snuggle-warmth.

I think I can safely sleep through the night tonight without a 2am barn check, but I have 2 more goats due in the next few days, so I'll make sure to fully enjoy my uninterrupted night's sleep tonight

Congrats, sleep well and all the best for the next ones! 🥰

baby goats have the second softest fur (just a hair less than kittens) known to man. Those two are so incredibly sweet!
in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

Do I remember correctly that you bred them late so they would be kidding after the bad weather was past? Maybe they are on strike to protest these weird conditions...
