I caught some respiratory bug (just tested negative, in case you're wondering…) so I decided to do something light around the house: finally try installing a pi-hole on a spare RPi!

I'm still testing it only from my Mac and iPhone, not yet the rest of the stuff, and… holy crap. Almost 20% of the DNS requests are garbage. 😲

Why don't all routers come with this stuff pre-installed?!

I set up a pi-hole a couple of years ago — super worthwhile, there’s a lot of junk and ads it filters out. And it runs decently even on a Zero, so it’s cheap to do.

(Currently running a Zero 2 for mine)

@montyhayter The best part (and main motivation) was to get rid of ads in the Portuguese public broadcaster app that play right when launching, or immediately before playing something (especially the live broadcasts which was incredibly annoying and disrespectful).

I'm totally fine if they want to charge me whatever cents they made from my ads in taxes.

in reply to Miguel Arroz

30%! 😮

Also, what the heck are my Mac and iPhone doing through the night?! Those are the only two devices using pi-hole for now…

in reply to Miguel Arroz

First hiccup, Apple Music does not work with pi-hole. I added a few addresses to the accept list, still nothing. Anyone has a list of addresses that I should add to the accept list that actually work?
in reply to Miguel Arroz

It works for me, but I don't know why. When I first installed pihole, it took a while to find a list of blocked/allowed things that was a balance of fewer ads but not so over-zealous that day-to-day things broke.

raw.githubusercontent.com/Stev…

raw.githubusercontent.com/kbog…

They don't seem quite as effective as they used to be, so have been meaning to look into more, but haven’t so far 😜

raw.githubusercontent.com/dayl… was too much for me.

@billgoats I'm using the first one, and that alone kills Music. I already added a wildcard for apple.com, and didn't fix it. Time to lower the privacy level and see what's going on… sigh.
in reply to Miguel Arroz

Hrm, not sure. It’s all a mix of hit and miss witchcraft. I’m sure you’ll get there!
in reply to dan 💾

@billgoats Huh, apparently nothing is being blocked, and still doesn't work. 😤
in reply to dan 💾

@billgoats No pi-hole in the way, after a reboot, still doesn't work over wifi at all. Only ethernet. Considering buying a farm and selling add devices to finance a little bit of it.

On a positive note, it was not a pi-hole problem!

in reply to Miguel Arroz

Oh, strange. You could set your dns server manually to the pihole for wifi, I guess. Bit of a pain with a phone though.
in reply to Miguel Arroz

Apparently it's not pi-hole related, Apple Music doesn't work at all on my Mac for some reason. Signed out. Signed in again. Seeing this. Quality.
in reply to Miguel Arroz

Tried again. Typed user and password. Dialog disappeared. Nothing happened at all. I'm not signed in.
in reply to Miguel Arroz

also, all that data, it's telemetry from the things to the thing
in reply to Luis Correia

@luisfcorreia Pi-hole was a red herring. The problem is some stupid bug in macOS sequoia. I hadn’t noticed it before because I upgraded this week and have been sick, so haven’t used the Mac much.
