At £46 billion (far over budget) Hinkley Point C is reckoned to be the most expensive project of its kind ever constructed. Britain just can’t do infrastructure can it.

somebody a while ago (while it was still at ~£23bn) described it to me as "the most expensive object in history".

I guess the ISS might beat it, but otherwise I can't think of anything, unless you include eg an entire national rail system as an "object".

that’s impressive. The new Finnish nuke was only about €8bn over budget, and is now actually generating.

Hinkley C is a French reactor design. The French have only recently managed to get the prototype at Flamanville operating. There are some in China that are operating but with troubles and there's the one in Finland. Over and above the problems afflicting all nuclear energy (which in my opinion make it a very bad idea) , this seems to be an overambitious and uninspired design and there was more politics than sense in choosing it for Hinkley.
