Am I just deluded in thinking that when I was a younger adult, journalists at least PRETENDED to hold politicians to account?
in reply to Sarah Brown

remember when politicians resigned when they got caught cheating?
in reply to Sarah Brown

Possibly, unless you're older than you look in your profile pic. You might genuinely remember those times if you're over 50. Probably not if you're younger.
in reply to Sarah Brown

Then you probably remember the time that journalists tried to hold John Major's government to account over all the "cash for questions" nonsense. I think that's more or less the last time they did it.
in reply to Christine Burns MBE πŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈπŸ“šβ§–

@christineburns Good question, I was wondering about that too. It was mostly the Telegraph who covered it, but they actually did a pretty good job, and I think things even changed as a result.

Yes, I think we can count it.

in reply to Sarah Brown

I miss Jeremy Paxman on that front. But I think it’s less the journalists (though some of that) and more that Trump and co demonstrated that if you don’t care about shame, you don’t feel you need to resign either. It’s pretty grim.

@apolaine
I don't know, it started a while back here.

I remember Amber Rudd resigning for inadvertently misleading Parliament and that was seen as somewhat anachronistic and noble, because nobody had resigned honourably for a genuine mistake since Peter Carrington over the Falklands

in reply to Sarah Brown

no, everybody has just had media training now and so never actually answers a question- it's infuriating!
in reply to Grant Stephens

@rexfuzzle
This.

I don't know how it can be changed. So many things in a functioning democracy a really depends on people's sense of fairness and it's all gradually being thrown out of the window.

Sorry, I'll be over in the corner

in reply to Grant Stephens

@Grant Stephens It's not just this. They don't need to not answer them if the journalists won't even ASK them.
in reply to Sarah Brown

Yup, this is true too. I supposes its just a function of not having impartial media :\
