@L dot Mastodon Did you know that in EVERY country where lead-tetra-ethyl was banned in fuel, there is a corresponding drop in violent crime 2 decades later?

Every one.

Kim Spence-Jones #FBPE reshared this.

FOR REAL??? I knew lead messed with human brains and caused all sorts of negative behavior but I had no clue on that statistic. Makes me wonder what's in our environment now that we don't yet know is terrible for us.
in reply to Sarah Brown

@L dot Mastodon Also, I’m 49 years old.

I try not to think about the implications of that too hard.

in reply to Sarah Brown

Yeah... I'm 36 and grew up in a pretty poor rural area where things like lead paint weren't phased out as quickly for economic reasons. I can only hope I avoided the worst of it.
in reply to L, beyblade moses

@L dot Mastodon I didn’t avoid the worst of it. The reason I’m a left-liberal is because I know what I would do with absolute power, and it terrifies me.
in reply to Sarah Brown

Maybe I should start taking the lead hypothesis seriously. I first encountered it in the Freakonomics book, a book which I find dubious, but stopped clocks are a thing.

@Ash If that’s not a smoking gun, I don’t know what is.

@Alexandra Lanes You and I are already outliers. Maybe we didn’t? Maybe compassion and kindness would come easier if it wasn’t for all the fucking 4-star.

@ashiewilkinson WOW this is stunning. They should be teaching this graph in schools (maybe they are now)

...oh, in the UK.

I was gonna go, because there was a recent big media push from the right to say that about Gen X in the US - as part of an attempt to woo GenX to the GOP - but it was bullshit, and based on bullshit.

But in the UK, I dunno.

(Basically they ripped the last six years of the Baby Boom - the rightest wing of the Boom - off and stuck them onto GenX in a way nobody does, _including them_. No American GenXer was born in the _1950s_, ffs. But people bleated it on anyway.)

@ashiewilkinson can we all just take a moment to appreciate the measurement series that is “Preschool Blood Lead.”

I'm here for this, but also we were raised by television. The comforting myths of a world that was already over by the 70s. Brands were our parents.

Tim
@EthanHolmes who are "and younger"? Generation alpha is like, 13 tops.
in reply to Sarah Brown

I certainly think it didn’t help. My experience suggests it was New Labour shovelling money into schools followed by the 2008 economic crisis.
in reply to Sarah Brown

i hope you're right. i worry that it's just easier to kick down sand castles than it is to build them
