Oh dear. People are trying to explain but they just aren’t getting it. reddit.com/r/Mastodon/comments…

> But you know that your pristine garden is going to have ads at some point, that's the only way social media is sustainable.

Yeouch! Damn, like, they don't understand a large portion of the internet. Like, no understanding of FOSS at all.

This whole thread was eye opening.

in reply to Madagascar_Sky

@Madagascar_Sky I'd live them to explain the mechanism by which my Friendica server, which is sitting in a drawer in the next room, starts serving ads.

Because I sure as fuck don't want their money.

in reply to Sarah Brown

meta, advertising dude
The sheer arrogance of claiming "ads are the only way social media is sustainable" while asking basic-ass questions about a network that has been around for years and not even knowing what "fedi" means
in reply to Sarah Brown

i think the person who says influencer marketing is the best bet here is onto something. Also I think people should give me one million dollars to shill their product
in reply to halcy

@halcy trying to pick a mastodon influencer is sounds wild though.

It'd required specialized knowledge of the space you're in and the disconnected nature of the fediverse.

With my sponsor nordVPN this is all a cinch though, use code 🐙🐙 at checkout for 15% off your first 6 months.

in reply to 🐙🐙

@oct2pus oh man, that’s a deal. Let me just get out my credit card out of my Ridge Wallet,
in reply to Sarah Brown

That's pretty funny. I wonder how many marketing firms will be fired by that client, before they accept reality.

Much love to the fediverse for not having ads.

in reply to Sarah Brown

I lost it at "how is it sustainable?" "It's a Mac mini in a drawer"
in reply to lori

@lori M2 though. I feel like I should make that bit clear. It’s a very NICE Mac mini.
@lori
in reply to Sarah Brown

I wonder if some successful authors start getting any profits from mastodoning eventually. You can't obviously push your ads straight into the reader's face, so some other mechanisms will eventually be developed.
in reply to Sarah Brown

Better to advise the client to write worthwhile content and post it to Mastodon

Good advice for anyone on the fedi

@vitaminsludge How horrified would you be as a client finding your PR firm asking “how do I do a new social media” on fucking Reddit (and then getting owned in the comments)

Bonkers
@bipolaron sure, that works for artists. But what if you just want to sell more pizza in the area, or maybe some new game or a gadget.
in reply to Sarah Brown

Pretty much the worst at patriotism there ever was and yet I still can't stop myself from humming "Battle Hymn of the Republic" as I read this. 🎭
in reply to Bonkers

@bonkers @bipolaron I bet if a pizzeria opened a fediverse account, they could gain some local followers right off the bat by sheer novelty of being a local business with a fedi account. If they actually posted something more interesting than pure ads, they could probably grow a worthwhile following *and* extend their reach through boosts.

Honestly I would love to follow an account that posted good looking pizza pics (with alt text)

@jepyang @bipolaron they usually have a limited menu 😀

The best one in my town hasn't changed their delivery menu in ages.

But yes, some short articles about Italian food, some tips for cooking, etc, would probably work to gain the popularity.

I'm genuinely interested in seeing more businesses on fedi and watching how they succeed (or fail, like Elon's 😀

in reply to Sarah Brown

I don't think advertising on Mastodon is all that hard. Create an account, get followers, and then tell them about your product. You could even ask them to retoot your ad to reach an even bigger audience.

@bipolaron @jepyang that's actually my point, the format of advertising and also doing business has to change to fit in the fediverse. It will be pretty exciting to see how people and businesses invent new models.
in reply to Sarah Brown

How do I advertise at my local anarchist book-fair? Everyone keeps telling me that they're "not interested" or "broke" and to "fuck off" - is this an instance of market failure?
in reply to Sarah Brown

and that kind of thought is encouraged by "wait and see" stances on a Facebook corporate instance. absolutely no ads on fedi, ever. refuse to tolerate anything else!
