I’m gonna need to renew my uk passport before I can get Portuguese citizenship.
Maybe I should do it a few years early before they stop issuing correct ones to trans people? The way things are going, them doing that seems quite likely.
we posted copies of our paperwork to my mother in Ireland because it's as well to have that kind of thing sorted out before you NEED to, when the Nazis are in government.
@Ailbhe On the other hand, with a citizenship application in progress, I don’t NEED a passport to live in Portugal. I just can’t leave until they grant me one.
@Ghost of Hope There’s a bit of a calculation here. I can apply for citizenship from the end of 2025. My passport is valid until the middle of 2026.
So when it expires, the application will be in progress. It takes about 2 years though.
A lot of stuff here is tied to my existing passport, so changing it is a logistical bother.
If the worst comes to the worst, it’s not catastrophic. I have a residence permit that’s valid until 2027, with a guaranteed renewal. The worst case scenario is that I’m stuck in the Schengen area for a couple of years until I get a Portuguese passport. If things get to that situation, my next step is likely renouncing UK citizenship anyway.
Yeah, the only question is whether they're going to start doing "passport must match birth certificate" before or after rescinding GRCs, as I expect the former could go through very quickly.
I suppose I should do the same. Not that I've got any kind of escape route, but at least it buys me a few more years on the outside chance of something happening.
@grayface_ghost Always plan for any bureaucracy taking longer than expected in Portugal. And then for taking even longer than that. But I’m guessing you already know that by now. 😅
