Inspired by a blooper in yesterday’s Wallace and Gromit, does anyone here know why the Western Region of BR stuck with lower quadrant semaphore signals when the rest of the network standardised on upper quadrant after nationalisation?

The blooper in question, incidentally
A shot from an animated film. A penguin is standing on the back of a railway train. To the left is a railway semaphore signal. Its arm is raised but the lens in front of its lamp is red.

probably stubbornness to be quite honest. GWR did a lot of things differently to the other companies and they were determined to keep as independent as they could, going as far as even making their own loco designs still.

@MikeFromLFE working on an old GWR branch line, you get this kind of insight. Often used phrase “there’s two ways of doing things, the Great Western way and the wrong way”
