Also, I am so totally over enforced short form posts. There's nothing big, clever, or useful about having to split shit up into threads. It's just wank.

The difference on Mastodon is that more often than not, the tsk-tsking and language coaching are sincere efforts at maintaining a conversation and raising its level, not winning it. I choose this. Also: Tech Nerds > Crypto Nerds, change my mind.

@System IV, Building K An indication of significant prowess in debating is being able to win a position that you do not believe in.

I do not posses such prowess, and therefore am, regretfully, unable to change your mind πŸ˜‰

I guess that’s the thing for me. Besides some (justifiably) angry and hair-triggered folks whom I’ve offended, most of it has been lifting each other up by sharing experiences, much less so debating each other.

I definitely prefer tech nerds to crypto peddlers. So no argument there.

But, I do have to say that the bits of chiding and tone policing I've received haven't felt like attempts at "earnest help" or raising the level of conversation. They've felt like messages that I'm not welcome. Which may or may not be what was intended.

Happily there hasn't been very much of that aimed directly at me, although it makes me pretty uncomfortable when I see it aimed at others. Not sure I've seen any of it that I'd call actual attempts to help. Maybe the only exception is the frequent requests to use Alt Text on images. Those are rarely personal or directed at specific posts and instead just trying to strengthen a good cultural norm.

@goodthinking people who tend to call other β€œpeople with twitter brain” are in no position to talk about language coaching and sincere efforts at maintaining a conversation, for they're mostly pompous arses with nothing useful to say.

@Neilasaurus @Sarah Brown I hope the network is big enough that he personally is not a majority of the impression one gets. 😁
in reply to Sarah Brown

Crypto nerds sounds too respectable. I like crypto crooks more.

Side note: I don't know about other people here, but I don't have an inaccurate "perception of them" because I have simply no "perception of them". I stay away from Twitter/LinkedIn/Facebook/Bluesky/TikTok/WhatsApp/... because they are centralized, under the control of a company that tries to make money from their "free" service.
I see no reason to presume their users are anything but normal people.

@neilasaurus @goodthinking People don't use social media because they care about computers. Computers are a way to use social media. Why would they want to hang out where people talk about stuff they find boring?

The vast majority of people in the world have no interest in how cars work, they just use them. Imagine if every time you went to the market there was some weirdy beardy telling you your overhead cam was frotzed and you're a bad person because of it.

@mikej @neilasaurus @goodthinking
I mean, it has to be said sometime, right? I know it's annoying but if the overhead cam being frotzed was causing excess CO2 emissions and you just did not care, that chiding would be warranted.

The chiding here, be nice and follow the rules of the community, is part of the solution to the melting world outside. If you don't follow the rules and it leads to the world ending, you deserve that chiding. Not a one-to-one, but sounds like #DontLookUp .

Wow, so I checked this post on like 7 different Mastodon iOS apps and only ONE rendered this post correctly: Tusker

β€ͺ @tusker

A couple of them wouldn’t even display the post and the others showed it as a wall of text.

in reply to Wraithe

@Wraithe @Tusker Went to have a look, but Tusky can’t seem to login to a friendica server.
in reply to Sarah Brown

@tusker I think Tusky & Tusker are diff apps, been meaning to check out Friendica, so now I know which Mobile app to try first. πŸ˜€
in reply to Wraithe

@Wraithe Tusky and Tusker are indeed differentβ€”Tusky is an Android app, and mine is iOS

And Tusker does support displaying lists. Most apps only support a very limited set of formatting optionsβ€”and lists are not usually among them

in reply to Wraithe

@Wraithe @Tusker sorry. That was autocorrect. It was indeed Tusker. Won’t log in to Friendica (needs to support oauth realistically)
in reply to Sarah Brown

@tusker Ahhh yes autocorrect. *shakes fist at sky*
Well that’s a shame. I do wanna try out friendica and an iOS client would be nice.
in reply to Sarah Brown

there's a fucking shitload of crypto nerds on bluesky cos the CEO is a "former" crypto grifter and seeded it with her mates. Block early and block often.

Anyone know where I parked my car anology? This thread’s got so many levels.
in reply to Sarah Brown

is there a popularity voting system there? I always feel like the lack of it here is part of why many don't like it, though none admit it in so many words
in reply to Sarah Brown

from what i read, you can only join if you get an invite, and I guess I am not on the right people's radar.
in reply to Andy

@Andy I just made a post asking if anyone had one spare, and a couple of weeks later someone must have remembered seeing it. Doesn’t ask, doesn’t get.
