It has come to my attention that some people think they need 5 gigabit fibre internet.

I am delighted to inform them that they do not. Stop wasting your money on bandwidth you can’t even fucking use, muppets.

You see your 4K smart TV what streams Netflix in Dolby ear destroyer 4K HDR supervision? It’s got a 100 megabit Ethernet port on it. Bet you.

You don’t fucking need 5 gigabits. Nobody does unless they’re running fucking Amazon from their front room or something.

This is the sort of bullshit that has people over the age of 40 buying 8K tvs when they can’t even resolve 720p anymore with their middle aged eyeballs.

Netflix: Hi! You, middle aged people most positioned to have disposable income for premium products: we will charge you extra for 4K.

CAN’T FUCKING SEE 4K, YOU DAFT BUGGERS.

besides, would much prefer high quality 720 to the over-compressed mess that is 4k from some of these services. The hideous artifacts around bright motion have ruined light sabers!!

but if I own fifty 4K smart TVs, one on every wall of my home, with ear destroying Dolby all on at the same time so I can't tell wtf is happening in any of them THEN do I get 5Gb Fibre!? 😝

@Chris Alemany🇺🇦🇨🇦🇪🇸🌱 You can, but the fuck you gonna watch? Yet another remake of WIlly Fucking Wonka because Netflix cancels anything original after 1 season?

😂 It would be a great way to binge long TV series. One episode of Star Trek TNG on each TV, I'd cut down viewing time from 3
months to 3 days! 😂 👽

@⠠⠵ avuko wankers. That’s who asked. World is beset by them.

Some people need high speeds because they're sharing/uploading content. For instance, I have a 750 Mbit/s plan. I don't need 750, but it's the cheapest plan that has 100 Mbit/s upload.

and unlike me, some folks share a lot of content via torrents, so i imagine they would be intetested in 5 Gbit/s

@Sieva 🚴🚇🏙️🌹 I’m running an entire fediverse server on 500/100 and it barely notices.

And a VPS is a damn site cheaper than wiring your house up with 10 gig switches that you’d need to even take advantage of such a connection.

It’s absurd.

in reply to Sarah Brown

I don't think that a fedi server requires a wide channel, unless it's some kind of media hosting.

Eh I don't know about it being cheaper. If you need a large storage and unlimited traffic it could easily be more expensive than just getting a few SSDs and a switch (but the ISP is probably providing one anyway) once than paying $$$ every month.

Back to your point, yeah you don't need 5 Gbit/s if all you do is hosting a Masto server and watching Netflix. But it's not always the case.

It’s the modern hifi nerdery, which largely featured the over-40s arguing about things they couldn’t hear.

I used to work in an office of, I dunno, 20 people. We had a 1 megabit leased line and everyone was jealous of us. We also hosted a few hundred web sites of varying popularity from the server room - gotta do something with all the spare bandwidth...
