Have you tested your latent Spanish reading knowledge yet? Despite being *very* different spoken, Spanish and Portuguese are similar enough written that when you study one you get a little bit of the other for free. For example, I knew without looking it up that your original sentence meant "Their [_] is out of fashion", and I was able follow about half of your conversation here without recourse to Google Translate. It's a delightful feeling, let me tell you.

In the example: “can I go to the toilet?” and they said “I don’t know, can you?”
The first is asking: Is it permitted for me to do this?
The second is asking: Do you have the capability?
So is "poder" the "I have permission"? ... related to "power"?
Is "conseguir" to have the capability?
