It has come to my attention that some people think they need 5 gigabit fibre internet.

I am delighted to inform them that they do not. Stop wasting your money on bandwidth you canโ€™t even fucking use, muppets.

You see your 4K smart TV what streams Netflix in Dolby ear destroyer 4K HDR supervision? Itโ€™s got a 100 megabit Ethernet port on it. Bet you.

You donโ€™t fucking need 5 gigabits. Nobody does unless theyโ€™re running fucking Amazon from their front room or something.

@Sieva ๐Ÿšด๐Ÿš‡๐Ÿ™๏ธ๐ŸŒน Iโ€™m running an entire fediverse server on 500/100 and it barely notices.

And a VPS is a damn site cheaper than wiring your house up with 10 gig switches that youโ€™d need to even take advantage of such a connection.

Itโ€™s absurd.

I don't think that a fedi server requires a wide channel, unless it's some kind of media hosting.

Eh I don't know about it being cheaper. If you need a large storage and unlimited traffic it could easily be more expensive than just getting a few SSDs and a switch (but the ISP is probably providing one anyway) once than paying $$$ every month.

Back to your point, yeah you don't need 5 Gbit/s if all you do is hosting a Masto server and watching Netflix. But it's not always the case.
