I have been saying this for years. To be a โ€˜seniorโ€™ manager or politician requires a complete lack of empathy, massive ego, ruthlessness and a complete lack of self awareness. Psychopaths by any other name!

We live in a world run by clinically insane sadists and I don't know if it's even possible to change that. ๐Ÿ˜ž

My girlfriend and I are currently writing a book called A Better Algorithm; A Manifesto For Democratic Communism, which we think has some pretty good ideas. We're just starting the pitching to agents / publishers stage (with the first draft written) so hopefully we'll be able to share our ideas soon ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป

I think part of the selection bias is that, at least in politics, you get accused of being an arsehole, in it for yourself, power-hungry, generally a bad person, etc.

If you are those things and/or a psychopath, you don't care and carry on. If you're not, those things take a toll on your mental health until you have to stop.

in reply to Zoe O'Connell

I think it's worse than that. As you and I both found out, there comes a point where you either decide your principles are negotiable if you wish to proceed or you quit.
in reply to Sarah Brown

The only things I regret about that are that it left other people who I respect/are friends in the lurch a bit, and I miss stuff like FCC.

Glad I gave it up though. It was killing me. Possibly literally.

in reply to Sarah Brown

I suspect I was on the way out the door anyway. Maybe if I'd hung on for another year, being chair of FCC might have given me enough of a seat at the table to offset the issues.

But I don't think I had the right mindset then to focus on just that and make the most of it.

in reply to Zoe O'Connell

You would have been ignored. It doesn't matter how high up you get. If you aren't willing to kiss the ring, you will be sidelined.
in reply to Sarah Brown

I came to the conclusion long ago that we are led by bulshitters who have an overly high opinion of their own skills. It's not just the top either it goes all the way down the management hierarchy.
in reply to Sarah Brown

wasn't there a documentary a few years ago that argued all corporations behaved like psychopaths, so makes sense that those who thrive within them are the same.
in reply to Sarah Brown

Once looked into that, and the richest non-sociopath I could find was Dolly Parton at half a billion. Everything over that is robbery, and we just should rob it back by confiscatory taxation. And if somebody brings a guillotine, I am ready to look the other way...
in reply to Martin Vermeer FCD

That Dolly is the exception rather than the rule is utterly tragic ๐Ÿ˜ž

Yvon Chouinard seems like a decent bloke and he's a billionaire.
in reply to Sarah Brown

I think the issue is that thanks to press / media (run by sociopaths / psychopaths) the electorate are duped into believing that these sociopaths / psychopaths are 'strong' and will make 'strong leaders'.

Jacinda Arden is probably an example of a non-sociopath politician debunking that lie.

I have to agree, although I usually call them Socipaths. Capitalism seems to have been designed by Sociopaths/Psychopaths for the benefit of sociopaths/psychopaths.
in reply to Sarah Brown

because 'success' means exploration. A normal human doesn't seek to exploit humans as mere objects. Psychopaths however, do
