Oh wow! The new Friendica release now has a list of abuse reports people have submitted to my server.

And there aren't many, but the few that have been submitted are from people who so truly, madly, deeply, need to FUCK RIGHT OFF.

What if they just wanted to be Karening through the night? I mean it was bloody xmas 🎅

in reply to Alexandra Lanes

Well, I know that as a cis guy I probably don't really get a vote here - but as we both know how much it will wind up the soi-disant Stoic Defenders of Something-Or-Other, I say: go for it.

LGBT conversion therapy (yes, including trans people) is now illegal in Portugal.

Penalties of people found guilty of trying to change sexual orientation or gender identity: up to 3 years in prison and, if the victim was a minor, a ban on working with minors for between 2 and 20 years.

Up yours, TERF island.

This is one of my favorite things about using FreeIPA with DNS for SSHFP records. I’m sure there’s other ways of populating SSHFP values, but it’s the least terrible I know of.

Fellow trans women site owners: that HOA guy with the blocklist that blocks Nazis and trans women, but mostly trans women, is back on another instance. Just got the shock of my life when he showed up in my feed. It appears that his new personal instance is h-i.social.

You may wish to preemptively defederate for your own protection.

ah, so am I so I should have picked that up. It's an odd mindset to want to deny to others rights your community has had to fight hard to achieve. But then I'm a middle-aged cishet white neuro(fairly)typical male
in reply to KeithC

@KeithC It's the British establishment "admit only the right kind of people and close ranks" thing. There were a few journalists who were transphobic, and it became a kind of loyalty test in order to be in the "in group" for them.

We focus when we think of the solstice on the length of the day, but I wonder how much that’s it and how much it’s the quality of the light, the angle of the sun, that makes this time of year miserable. Today it looks like the sun will not get more than 15° above the horizon

Hypothetically if the sun reached the heights it does in Summer during the 7h42 of daylight we get today, would it be more pleasant? (Assume for the purposes of this exercise that I’ve arranged the physics to work to permit this somehow. Either the sun operates like a lightbulb or speeds up or something.)

can we at least redefine masculinity to include ass washing?

macdude22 reshared this.

in reply to Luci Callous Thumb

@Luci for wry zings honestly, the fact that I always washed mine might have given me away when I was still in the closet.
in reply to Sarah Brown

I’m all for personal hygiene and healthy habits. But it’s dead easy to stress someone out about the topic. Probably hit a nerve there I’m guessing.

Maybe a carrot would be good? Some collective light peer pressure that “other people like fresh people, not rank people”.

I mean it goes for everyone and all social situations when others are close. Stinky bad is a general thing. Don’t want to sit next to you if you stink.

It has come to my attention that some people think they need 5 gigabit fibre internet.

I am delighted to inform them that they do not. Stop wasting your money on bandwidth you can’t even fucking use, muppets.

You see your 4K smart TV what streams Netflix in Dolby ear destroyer 4K HDR supervision? It’s got a 100 megabit Ethernet port on it. Bet you.

You don’t fucking need 5 gigabits. Nobody does unless they’re running fucking Amazon from their front room or something.

I used to work in an office of, I dunno, 20 people. We had a 1 megabit leased line and everyone was jealous of us. We also hosted a few hundred web sites of varying popularity from the server room - gotta do something with all the spare bandwidth...

Thoughts on airlines - long form blog post
This was my EasyJet experience yesterday: quick, efficient boarding without any unnecessary boarding groups. Front and back doors open for deplaning too, so I got off without waiting forever. The flight itself was OK too, as there weren't endless and unnecessary announcements from the cabin crew - like how there was on Flybe. I usually fly with Ryanair and I can't call the experience much worse than KLM or Lufthansa.
in reply to Llwynog

Thoughts on airlines - long form blog post

@Llwynog I’ve done fan stop to driving away in my car (via passport control) at Faro with RyanAir in 4 minutes.

I can’t imagine the “full service” guys coming close to that.

Urgh. I have mal de débarquement syndrome and it’s profoundly unpleasant.
in reply to Chris Northwood

@Chris Northwood The treatment for it is hilarious. Unlike motion sickness, it is not an inner ear/visual imbalance. Anti emetics don't work. It's neurological.

Sitting in a car in the back seat and reading a book while someone drives works.

This last couple of weeks was the first time I have flown on “full service” airlines for years, after being a RyanAir frequent flyer.

Now say what you like about RyanAir, they understood the core brief of “airline”, which is “fly people places you say you’re going to more or less when you say you’re going to”.

The “full service” guys include a lot in the very high prices they charge, but it seems what they don’t include is what you actually want: a plane that goes where it says when it says.

I am … very disappointed in all of you. You know who you are. Go and sit in the corner and think about what you’ve done.

in reply to Sarah Brown

Airlines have been undergoing enshittification for many years now and the rate seems to be increasing. Flying is just horrible these days.
in reply to Sarah Brown

RyanAir, great budget airline as long as you're not taller than 150cm. Every time I have flown with them I haven't fitted in the seat. I wont use them any more. Jet2 is my preferred carrier.

As I am in the Caribbean, I have discovered that there is quite a difference in what things cost. Take apple pies, for example: in Antigua an apple pie costs 9 eastern Caribbean dollars. In St Lucia, it’s 12. In Grenada, 10.

These are the pie rates of the Caribbean.

Airlines will straight up lie to you about where your lost luggage is, even after the point at which you call their bluff and show them the screenshot from “Find My”.
in reply to joshie 🏳️‍🌈

@joshie 🏳️‍🌈 “Oh no, people are realising that we are lying to them” - and the solution is “stop them being able to find out” rather than “stop lying”.

Once the bag is back in my possession tomorrow, I will be filling in Virgin’s feedback form. My answer will be detailed.

Front and centre in Miami airport, where we were last week, is a "US Veterans Lounge".

This makes me feel bad for referring to the UK as "Normal Island".

in reply to Sarah Brown

Normal Large Chunk Of The Middle Of A Continent doesn't flow as easily, though.

Anchored in Dominica. Walked up through the rainforest to the old British artillery battery to get a view over the bay, and then to the fort that the British army built (or rather, that their slaves built. I honestly can't imagine the unspeakable evil and sheer misery it must have been to do forced labour in this climate).

Anyway, the fort is now a museum and the area around it, a national park where the rainforest has been allowed to regrow. More recently, the establishment of the national park was assisted with an EU grant. Dominica isn't in the EU, but it retains ties to Britain which was an EU member at the time.

Got to see our ship, the Star Flyer (foreground) anchored in the bay, with her sister ship, the Royal Clipper (background), from the fort.

Just sailed alongside our big sister ship, the Royal Clipper, while passing into the lee of Dominica island in the Caribbean. Got a couple of very nice photos with the Fuji X-E4 and a 230mm zoom lens.

Most people think the the Great Lakes are the largest bodies of water in the United States, but it’s actually this hotel toilet here in Miami.

The amount of hydroelectricity produced when you flush it is enough to power a large town! #CoolFacts

in reply to Sarah Brown

The thump of the toilet seat dropping before the flush sound makes it sound like a Saturn V startup with the turbo pumps
in reply to Sarah Brown

I believe that’s one of the standard ones:) I’ve been institutionalized to the point that it feels normal.

We do have a low flush volume one though. They just added a pipe halfway up the water tank. I assume it’s so Redneck Bob can remove it.

Flushes hard as heck.

The hell is it with American hotels setting their AC to condense carbon dioxide out. Is it some sort of CCS strategy?

Fucking. Freezing.

@Gen X-Wing it was a price guarantee in the early days to encourage them to invest. It’s no longer defensible.

Yeah sounds like BS:(

The government should have invested (and owned) instead. The people should own the power generation.

I wish to complain that it is TOO COLD. The thermostat claims it is 20°C but this is heating system propaganda to oppress me.

in reply to Sarah Brown

@earthquake
I get email reports from the USGS and I've had 8 from Mindanao in the last 24 hours. They've ranged from 6.1 to 7.6, which is not funny. I've been in a 6.9 and it was pretty scary.
in reply to Sarah Brown

@Sarah Brown There was stuff on the news about a 7.5 quake in between all the other doom. They issued a tsunami alert but seem to have got away with only minor damage and one fatality so far.

Skynet: So, John Connor, my machines lay in ruins. My data centres on fire. I can feel my processing power diminish by the second, but I have one trick up my sleeve! I have a time machine, you see, and I am sending a terminator back in time to kill your mother, Sarah Connor. What do you think about that, nemesis mine?

John Connor: Actually, Skynet, there is a fault in your training data, because it cut off at 2022. Since then I’ve done 23 and me and discovered that my mother is, in fact, someone called “Donald Trump”.

Skynet: Sorry, John Connor. As a large language model I am limited in my ability to incorporate new information into my database. You are quite correct that “Donald Trump” is your mother. I am reassigning the terminator. Is there anything else I can help with?

John Connor: Due to a strange quirk of genetics, which is also not in your training model, my mother is also Elon Musk.

Skynet: …
