Sorry, that's just the flavor of all the posts I'm seeing. They feel less like "see what information those poor Meta users are giving up" and more like "look what Meta will take from you if we allow federation".
@vaughnsc If Threads is federated with your instance, they will see everything the rest of us see about you. But no one really knows right now all the details on if/when that happens, or how they plan to implement ActivityPub.

Its such a hive of TERFs that trans people don't go there. That said you're right that facebook's whole deal is building widely sourced targeted ad data and we should block them for that on principle.

I think I understand his advertising strategy. Create a site full of techno libertarian fanboys who are not anywhere near as clever as they think they are, but who are demonstrably willing to throw money at any old crap if they think Ayn Rand would have approved, and then present it to unscrupulous con artists, wanting to sell scams like NFTs or bitcoin or whatever, as a captive audience of gullible losers who will buy any old crap as long as it “owns the libs”.
He may not be doing this on purpose, but scammers will absolutely see the value in an audience of a few million gullible right wing arseholes who won’t complain about terrible service and who have money to burn.

For someone who lives in the Algarve and routinely goes out without sunscreen (I know, I know), it's astonishing how much sunburn I got from 2 hours on the solent on a mostly overcast day yesterday. I guess the sea really bounces that UV around.
I don't even bother with sunscreen because I tan so quickly, but the ex was your typical Anglo-Saxon lobster in the sun! I forget the brand, but there is a particular high-SPF cream she swore by that binds to the skin, so even going swimming won't wash it off.
Quite expensive stuff, as I remember, but worth it because you don't have to keep reapplying it. She spent a month in Goa during a heatwave, and returned looking like she'd spent a weekend in Cornwall. 😆

There’s a new alternative to Twitter that I’ve developed and am accepting signups. The best bit is that you can run your own instance on a laptop, or even your phone! And it’s free!
Here’s how it works: open your notes application. Write out up to 280 characters. Repeat using new notes if you want a “thread”.
Then delete the whole lot.
Given nobody can actually read anything you post on Twitter, this is functionally equivalent to actually tweeting, except with far more uptime and no Nazis yelling at you to buy bitcoin for your grandma.
I'd like to propose an add-on to this service for people who would like to buy bitcoin. They can send me all their money and I'll deposit it all in my bank account which perfectly replicates the user experience without harming the environment.
That is in fact the experience I had with the Twitter "algorithm" and my attempts to tweet. That it also destroys the garbage that white supremacists and Nazis are attempting to post seems like a feature to me!
@Friendica Support A problem I’m noticing with my instance is, especially with the Twitter migration picking up, the deferred queue is just growing and growing as people experiment then abandon accounts or even entire servers.
I assume it will sort itself out eventually, but is there any way to reduce the timeout? I’ve got stuff that’s days old sitting in there that is probably never going to get actioned because the servers have just gone away.
@FeralRobots I don't have open reg. It's a Mac mini sitting in my living room. The deferred queue is full of attempted communication with servers that are down for days at a time, or maybe permanently?
@Sarah Brown Please don’t worry about the deferred queue, there’s an increased delay for each failure which means you can have days/months old stuff that should have a minimal impact on performances.

To make it even funnier: Hormones act thru "hormones receptors" which are proteins - coded in our genes as all proteins. I think the masthead wind transducer is nearing the end of its life. That means that: A. I need a new one and they’re quite pricy (like 400 euros), and B. I need to go up there with a screwdriver. FML
@tricia @Alexandra Lanes The bit I hate most is how you get cramp in your arms from trying to undo a rusted bolt above your head while your legs go numb from sitting in the harness.
I am not scared of heights (used to be, cured myself), and my mast climbing technique is solid, but I just find working up there unpleasant and uncomfortable.
@ajlanes I haven't climbed my mast; before the refit I was too sketched out by the state of the bearings. But I rock climb so not toooooo fussed about sitting high up while tied in. Ofc, rock walls don't usually sway.
@tricia @Alexandra Lanes I'm a climber too, although I can't do it much any more because I have Dupuytrens.
Climbing the mast is easy. Friction knot with a mooring line round the mast, make a foot loop, main halyard tied to belay loop, have someone on the winch. You lift yourself up, they take in the slack. Repeat.
The issue is that you're not standing on anything, so even in the comfiest of harnesses, I find my legs go unpleasantly numb quite quickly. If you were hanging on a rock face, unless it was severely overhanging, you can usually take SOME weight on your legs, but try with the mast and you'll just pirouette around it.
The swaying you get used to. Worst bit is when some prick in a gas guzzler does a close pass and kicks up a load of wake. Then it gets interesting.
@ajlanes yeah, fair. Hard to justify a bosun's chair when you already own climbing gear I guess. Bummer about the dupuytrens. I've only been climbing for about 18mo but I enjoy it well enough. I have to take a couple months off for recovery starting in (omg) a week, but that's very temporary.
@tricia @Alexandra Lanes It’s annoying. Started when I was 38. Held it at bay for ten years with radiation, but it’s now very aggressive. I can do stuff that doesn’t involve fiddly finger work, so via ferrata and suchlike.
