@llwynog
I have the same experience when it comes to clothes and textiles from the parents' or grandparents' generation:
clearing out my parents' house I remember handling old clothes (coats, blouses, shoes, gloves and scarves), and the realization on the first touch:
"Wow, this such a great, thick and built-to-last quality of textile!"
This was clothing that was 50 to 80 years old.
I wasnt used to feeling that kind of quality in my clothes lifetime. Mindboggling. Sad.

I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It's a depression. Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar...YouTube
@geekylou :transgender_flag: that happened to me in the Caribbean last month (minus the afterburner. A330s donโt have those)
Bit of a nuisance.
So, out of interest (I drive a Nissan Leaf, which is in many ways my ideal car, but theyโre EOL), what car is available today that satisfies the following:
Battery EV
Not an iPad/SUV crossover
Hatchback with decent boot space (previous comment about not an SUV still applies)
Intelligent cruise control with lane following
If Nissan updated the Leaf to have CCS2 and an actively cooled battery, it would be just perfect IMO, but instead they scrapped it and replaced it with the Ariya, which is an SUV/iPad crossover and they broke one of the Leafโs best features (e-pedal) in the process too.

Don't think so. The ergonomic engineering of controls in cars is one of those things that looks seemless, but is the result of lots of design expertise. The controls themselves are quite expensive because they have to work reliably in temperature and environmental extremes. Sticking an iPad on the dashboard is relatively inexpensive. It is also a safety nightmare, but hey its so cool ๐.
@chris @mastodonmigration
I reckon touch-only is cheaper nowadays. Touchscreens are cheap commodity items, note that the CPU behind them is nearly always underpowered and the UI poor, the assembly cost is less than lots of buttons, and it's identical for all versions regardless of features.
Hyundai's design team have stated that they plan to stick with buttons. But they don't really have a Leaf-sized hatchback (maybe Ionic 5, but I think it's bigger, and the looks will be marmite)
Conversation with the wife now about why the angry Christian types donโt froth about Dan Simmonsโ Hyperion/Endymion series.
I mean, itโs literally about the second coming of Christ, sent by god to die a horrible death so that humanity can be redeemed, only god is us, if we heed the message, sending said sacrifice back through time, and sheโs a teenage girl because apparently the carpenter from Nazareth had one job (apart from the carpentry gig), which he fucked up, so sheโs sent to do it properly, and itโs the Catholic Church which tortures her to death this time round.
Anyway, the conclusion was that they arenโt upset because the books are longer than their attention spans.

After taking a few hours off in deference to the guilty verdict in the trial of the murderers of Briana Ghey, the UK press are once again back at it, going on about how trans women need to be banned from All The Things.
This, presumably, informed last nightโs nightmare from which I woke in a pool of sweat in which I was in the process of being beaten to death by TERFs on a train going from London to Cambridge in a near future UK.
Lovely.

Randomly listening to Muse, and their weird conspiracy thing about how the "powers that be" want your "compliance".
And I find myself wondering, "comply with what?"
And honestly, the only thing I can think of is "paying taxes".

Fell badly from my SUP yesterday. Initial tenderness in left knee which was bent at an awkward angle as I fell. Managed to paddle several more kilometres.
Later it swelled up and became agonising. Barely slept last night with the pain. Joint remains stable and able to bear load though. Got a compression bandage today. Itโs helping massively.
Dr Google suggests that this is a grade 1 MCL tear. Mild, as the joint still retains full function. It just hurts like a fucker.
Apparently it should heal in 1 to 3 weeks. Iโm hoping for 1.

@Jack I mean, this took almost none of my body weight laterally. I was almost in freewill at the time.

LGBT conversion therapy (yes, including trans people) is now illegal in Portugal.
Penalties of people found guilty of trying to change sexual orientation or gender identity: up to 3 years in prison and, if the victim was a minor, a ban on working with minors for between 2 and 20 years.
Up yours, TERF island.

We focus when we think of the solstice on the length of the day, but I wonder how much thatโs it and how much itโs the quality of the light, the angle of the sun, that makes this time of year miserable. Today it looks like the sun will not get more than 15ยฐ above the horizon
Hypothetically if the sun reached the heights it does in Summer during the 7h42 of daylight we get today, would it be more pleasant? (Assume for the purposes of this exercise that Iโve arranged the physics to work to permit this somehow. Either the sun operates like a lightbulb or speeds up or something.)

Iโm all for personal hygiene and healthy habits. But itโs dead easy to stress someone out about the topic. Probably hit a nerve there Iโm guessing.
Maybe a carrot would be good? Some collective light peer pressure that โother people like fresh people, not rank peopleโ.

It has come to my attention that some people think they need 5 gigabit fibre internet.
I am delighted to inform them that they do not. Stop wasting your money on bandwidth you canโt even fucking use, muppets.
You see your 4K smart TV what streams Netflix in Dolby ear destroyer 4K HDR supervision? Itโs got a 100 megabit Ethernet port on it. Bet you.
You donโt fucking need 5 gigabits. Nobody does unless theyโre running fucking Amazon from their front room or something.

While I certainly don't disagree that a lot of the flag-carriers could pull their socks up, my understanding is that that the way Ryanair treat both their staff and customers leaves a lot to be desired.
I feel that some of the other low-cost airlines would make better role models for the flag-carriers.
@Sean D AIUI, while as a large employer they are not without conflicts, they are generally regarded as one of the better employers in the industry, especially if youโre flight crew.
Re customer service, I have only ever had positive experiences. The reputation for โif your bag is a mm too big youโre fucked and we will be rude to youโ is typical of EasyJet, not RyanAir.
They like to cultivate their PR image as a ruthless cost cutter because it gets them mindshare, but the reality and the reputation are rather different.
A quick search of "ryanair working conditions" vs "easyjet working conditions" doesn't look good, however I do appreciate that bashing Ryanair does make for a good story.
For customer service, I was thinking more of when things go wrong, they have a reputation for being unhelpful. For example when requesting compensation/refunds. That probably does only apply to a small minority of customers, so it does make for a sustainable business model.
@Llwynog Iโve done fan stop to driving away in my car (via passport control) at Faro with RyanAir in 4 minutes.
I canโt imagine the โfull serviceโ guys coming close to that.

@Chris Northwood The treatment for it is hilarious. Unlike motion sickness, it is not an inner ear/visual imbalance. Anti emetics don't work. It's neurological.
Sitting in a car in the back seat and reading a book while someone drives works.
